Consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Webinar 2 Summary
On 30 May together with Reporters without Borders Sweden and Svea Green Foundation, UWEC Work Group conducted the second webinar in our series dedicated to the environmental and climate consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group and UWEC Work Group expert Oleksii Vasyliuk spoke to webinar participants about the consequences of munitions use and chemical pollution stemming from the military action in Ukraine.
Vasyliuk devoted particular attention to the scale of the damage, existing analyses, and possible future consequences resulting from chemical soil pollution, ecosystem destruction caused by blast waves, burned land caused by the use of incendiary munitions, environmental impacts of artillery fire and destroyed industrial sites, and river and sea pollution, including military “garbage” consisting of abandoned and damaged military equipment.
