An analysis of satellite imagery conducted by McKenzie Intelligence Services at the request of Greenpeace Ukraine in February 2026 revealed intensification of the militarization of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Construction of new military facilities and anti-drone fortifications has been observed on the plant’s grounds.
Satellite data shows that the cooling pond’s surface area has decreased by approximately 100,000 square meters. Occupying forces have also built a dam dividing the pond. Such interference with the cooling system could create additional risks to nuclear safety.
Near the sluice gates, as well as on the northern and western shores of the pond, major structures resembling reinforced bunkers have been discovered. Hangars, trenches and fortifications typical of a front line are being built along the plant’s perimeter. Many of them are protected by metal anti-drone structures.
Experts note that Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is gradually being transformed into a military facility. The presence of military equipment and fortifications on the Europe’s largest NPP’s grounds violates nuclear safety principles and increases risks for the entire region.
Satellite analysis also found no evidence of attacks on the plant by Ukrainian Armed Forces. The recorded power outages are likely due to damage to power lines following Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure or were deliberately staged by Russian occupiers for propaganda purposes. Between February 2025 and February 2026, 13 such incidents were recorded, resulting in the plant periodically losing connection to the power grid.
